KARACHI: The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has rejected allegations by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) that it has been withholding funds needed for the national hockey team’s participation in the Asian Champions Trophy in China.
In a strongly worded statement, the PSB criticised the PHF for what it termed “baseless allegations,” explaining that any delays in releasing funds were due to the federation’s failure to submit necessary documentation in a timely manner.
The PSB revealed that the PHF had requested a budget of over Rs55 million, in addition to $60,000 in foreign exchange, and sought funding for 27 players and six officials. The sports board deemed this request “excessive” and “beyond international standards,” noting that it had instead agreed to fund air tickets for 19 players and four officials, consistent with global norms.
“Despite this agreement, the PHF claimed it had already purchased tickets, which the PSB agreed to reimburse upon receipt of the original tickets,” the PSB said, emphasising that any delays were the result of the PHF’s failure to meet procedural requirements.
The PSB disclosed it had already extended substantial financial support to the federation, including Rs37.5 million and Rs59.15 million, and had approved additional funds for the team’s participation in the tournament set for September 6 to 18. “The PSB remains fully committed to supporting the national hockey team and ensuring its successful participation in international tournaments,” the statement read.
The sports board added that it had also supported a three-week training camp at the Naseer Bunda Hockey Stadium and provided accommodation at the Sports Complex in Islamabad.
The PSB accused the PHF of failing to provide the necessary documentation on time, including player and official lists, computer clearance proformas, undertakings, and surety bonds. “The delays in the release of funds were due to the PHF’s repeated failure to comply with these requirements,” the PSB asserted.
This row over funding comes in the wake of a statement by PHF President Tariq Bugti, claiming that the Pakistan hockey team had to travel to China on credit.
Referring to Article 9.5 of the PHF Constitution, the PSB stressed that it is the federation’s responsibility to raise its own funds but reiterated its commitment to supporting the sport in Pakistan.
