LAHORE: Pakistan’s loss to Bangladesh in the first Test match in Rawalpindi has triggered widespread criticism, with cricket experts blaming overconfidence, poor management, and a focus on personal milestones over team success.
Ahmad Shahzad, a former Pakistani cricketer, specifically blamed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) management, including Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, for the defeat. He accused the PCB of recycling the same players who prioritise personal statistics over team success. Shahzad also criticised long-time advisors in the PCB, accusing them of failing to address ongoing issues in the team.
Former cricketer Tanvir Ahmed slammed Pakistan team for their humiliating 10-wicket defeat against Bangladesh. Tanvir called the defeat “disgraceful” and highlighted the lack of discipline within the team. He expressed his frustration on social media, emphasising that Pakistan’s failure to perform, especially in a home series, was a result of poor preparation and commitment.
Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal expressed his concerns over Pakistan’s performance in the first Test against Bangladesh. Speaking on his YouTube channel “Catch and Bat with Kamran Akmal,” he highlighted the “serious issues” within the national team, emphasising how a supposedly weaker Bangladesh side managed to expose Pakistan’s shortcomings in Test cricket.
Akmal said that Test matches are a true measure of a team’s caliber. He said at best Pakistan could hope for a draw in the series. He credited Bangladesh for their bravery, temperament, and excellent shot selection throughout the match.
Akmal praised Mushfiqur Rahim for his 191-run innings, stating that it was unfortunate Rahim couldn’t reach a double century. He also lamented the lack of meaningful discussion in Pakistan’s camp about improving the team’s overall performance, calling for a professional overhaul in Pakistan cricket.
A senior analyst pointed to overconfidence and poor planning as major factors contributing to the defeat. He also highlighted the flawed selection process, where players are chosen for the Test team based on their performances in T20 or ODI formats, rather than on their suitability for the longer format.
