LAHORE: The Pakistan national hockey team played out a thrilling 4-4 draw against China in a warm-up match for the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy.
The high-scoring encounter showcased glimpses of the team’s potential.
The match against China was a close contest, with both teams locked at 2-2 at halftime. Imad Butt’s successful penalty stroke kept Pakistan in the game, but China managed to equalise late in the second half.
This draw comes amid concerns raised by President of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), Tariq Bugti. He has highlighted the challenges the sport faces.
Talking to the media here, Bugti revealed that the national team traveled to China “on borrowed tickets.” He stressed the need for greater attention to be paid to hockey, Pakistan’s national sport. While acknowledging the special grant provided by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Bugti lamented the lack of “status and respect” given to the sport. Looking forward to the Asian Champions Trophy, Bugti expects a tough challenge against arch-rivals India. He acknowledged India’s higher ranking but expressed hope for a strong performance from the Pakistani team.
